Water Framework Directive
The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is a standard from the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union which establishes the community action framework in the scope of water policies. Directive 2000/60/CE regulates water uses and protection at the European level as likewise establishes the parameters and metric data required to carry out the measurement of water quality. The WFD objective is the protection of European Water bodies (coastal, estuaries, and continental water) within quality levels whose reference levels are those established in Legislative Royal Decree 1/2001, of 20th of July, which approves the codifying legislation of the Water Law and in the Order ARM/2656/2008, of 10th of September, which accordingly approves the Hydrological Planning Instruction (HPI).
Our services include the evaluation of the Water Mass Status of rivers, lakes, coastal waters, transition waters, reservoirs, and other officially approved modified waters. It is an integral service in which samplings are designed and executed as well as analytical tests and taxonomical determinations in the Laboratory, the indexes are calculated and finally the water mass status is evaluated based on the established reference conditions. In fulfilment of the Hydrological Planning Instruction (HPI), the ecological potential or status as well as the chemical status are appraised.
Appraisal of the quality indicators for the determination of the ecological status, which is divided into biological, physiochemical and hydromorphological aspects.

Calculation of the indicators established for the phytobenthos and diatoms (IPS, MDIAT), for the freshwater macroinvertebrates (IBMWP, METI, IASPT, EPT), for the marine macroinvertebrates (M-AMBI, MEDOCC), for the icthyofauna (EFI, % indigenous species), for the phytoplankton (Chlorophyll-a, Algal biovolume, IGA, % Cyanobacteria), for the macrophytes (coverage, presence of indigenous species, mTR), for macroalgae (CFR, CARLIT/Benthos, POMI), among numerous others.
Assessment and comparison with reference limits and calculation of the established indicators (IVF, IHF, QBR, ICF, END, etc.) Determination of the trophic status of the reservoirs (TSI, TSIC Indexes).
Appraisal of the quality indicators for the determination of the chemical status according to the Environmental Quality Standards (EQS), Directive 2008/105/CEE and Royal Decree 60/2011, Annual Averages (EQS-AA) and Maximum Admissible Concentrations (EQS-MAC).
